Grading of Books and Magazines

All Grading Scrupulous, that’s definition 2: (Punctiliously exact)

Sealed/New

This is usually NOT one of my Gradings. Sealed means the piece is still sealed and has never been opened. If it shows damaged corners or something like that, I will grade it or mention it in the individual description. If it is not sealed, I might say it is New because of other factors like the binding being so tight that the book does not open much without applying more force on it.

NM (Near Mint)

Like New or NM or Flawless. I might say this if it was bought and never read and/or never mistreated. Upon inspection, the Dust Jacket (if applicable) does not have any visible scratches, scuffs or damage of any kind. If there is noticeable adhesive from price tags, or a penciled price or penned name on the inside cover I will say it in the description or demote the grading if it is in pen. Expensive Books might be more detailed in description. A loss of sheen on a Dust Jacket or one single dog-eared page might go un-noticed on books under $11. I would normally downgrade any book with creases to VG+ or maybe VG++ (the extra + is like an asterisk separating Flawless from almost flawless)

VG+ (Very Good Plus)

VG+ is almost flawless. The Book or Magazine has little sign of being used. 1 or 3 exceptionally light scuffs or 1 small indentation from pressure would bring it to VG+. Any Damage on a dust Jacket will only be minimal and close-up pictures offered. Sometimes I will even add a (+) and make it VG++ if there are only 1 or 2 very small almost un-noticeable blemishes. At first glance it appears to have been used once and might have light shelf ware.

VG (Very Good)

Some light scuffs and/or scratches or even one single bad tear or abrasion could bring the Book or Magazine down to VG. There may be discolorations or several small tears on dust jacket or a page. Maybe some writing in the book. Binding is sound.

VG- (Very Good Minus)

More scuffs, scratches, tears and/or abrasions but not so many or so bad as to make a reader or collector completely disregard it. Binding is intact and unless it is a very treasured or rare item, it may only serve as a reading copy depending on its collectable worth. Dust Jacket might be compromised. Still going up the hill on these 1-8 options…

G+ (Good Plus)

This is the other side of the hill on my scale of 1-8 options. There is no middle option. It is all downhill from here again, still… here we have 4 Grades on top and 4 on bottom. Not all the problems listed are ever on one item. I hope not. Binding is still intact but may have weakened. There could be more of the problems listed above. Tears, pen markings inside, discolorations, dog-ears, damage, water stains, etc. If it had all that, it would be Good or Good-, which are both Bad.

G  (Good)

Bad, Binding usually still intact unless otherwise noted. Good for time traveling and nostalgic vacations into rare collectable worlds and/or facts that save the day.

G- (Good Minus)

More bad… Binding may be detached. Good for saving the farm (Facts) or saving history (facts and/or fiction).

Poor

Good for making art with (Like Barbara Wildenbour) or scanning and cataloging History and Facts at your personal library.
