I am not an expert on the different variations, I will try and list everything that is relevant first with description of condition and grading later on.
Record and sleeve grading is very subjective and is my opinion only based on the grades I have experienced over a number of years. I always try to point out every flaw and describe items as I would want others to when I am buying a record. If you look at my feedback history you will see I have 100% satisfaction and many compliments on accurate description both good and bad. The higher the value the more critical I will be so you should always be either receiving what you expect or ideally pleasantly surprised.
Please please ask questions first buy later, I really do not want to have to deal with any returns or complaints that something is not as expected. If it is important to you please ask any question you like or request additional photographs.
I have priced this on the high side to give true collectors time to assess the item and make a fair offer.
Should I not sell in the next few weeks I will go down the auction route.
First of all there is absolutely no doubt that the sleeve is an original, the patina and colouring are as you would expect from a 50 year old piece of music history.
Catalogue number is 588 171 - later versions added a K
There is a thick silver strip to the base of the sleeve.
Inner sleeve is an original with matching patent No's 800513 973939
The label credits read Superhype and Jewel, but does not have the error of the track numbers where it repeats "3"
Later pressings amended the credits to Warner Bros.
Matrix Side 1 - 588171 A//1 1 2 6 The matrix is stamped with the 3rd "8" crossed out and an inverted 8 etched above it. The "6" is what I believe should be there but it is not very clear and maybe partially missing.
Matrix Side 2 - 588171 B//1 1S 16 The matrix is stamped with again the 3rd "8" crossed and another 8 etched next to it. The "1S and "16" afterwards are again not very clear, just what I believe should be there.
Again if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. I have tried to photograph them but I am struggling to make them visible.
Record Appearance - G/VG The grading overall sits in between G and VG - "Good Plus" perhaps.
Side 1 - Has several light scratches of medium length all over. One scratch is a little more prevalent between tracks 1 and 2, but is not deep enough to be felt with running a finger over it. There is a deep shine to the grooves and has been professionally cleaned recently. The labels have a deep bright colour, with the usual numerous spindle marks when tilted to the light. A much enjoyed copy. The dead wax has imprinted lines which I believe would have been from new when manufactured. Hence why it is difficult to read the matrix stamps. This is the only copy I have owned so I cannot compare.
Side 2 - Probably a few more very light scratches all over, than Side 1. A couple are a little more obvious, but I cannot find any deep enough to be felt when running a finger over them. Dead wax and labels the same as Side 1.
Record Audio - G/VG Although I would not consider this a record you purchase to play I have played it through in it's entirety and with confidence say that there are no skips, jumps or pop/clicks. There is light surface noise throughout with some deterioration to sound, but at no point is it overwhelming and for the most part is kept to the background. I would then grade it in between VG and G. I am playing this on quite a "bright" needle, a Grado GF3 Blue on a Technics SL-1200. Bass is a little thin, but I think that is to be expected with these early pressings. If you want a copy of this album to listen to buy the 200g Classic Records pressing from 2005, amazing. This is a piece of music history to buy as an investment, and up there with Please Please Me (Black & Gold) and Dark Side Of The Moon (Triangle) as essential parts of any serious Vinyl collection.
Record Sleeve - G/VG If this was a "normal" record I would probably grade this at VG as it is fully intact and shelf wear is only average. I will down grade it slightly due to it's high value and there is quite a lot of dirt which may clean up. I have tried to photograph the edges and corners, if you would like any other pictures please ask,
Edge wear is very minimal as it is a laminated sleeve. The spine has lost some rigidity but I would imagine this is normal. There are a lot of creases to the laminate, with some uplift on the face of the sleeve creating "lightning forks" under a bright light. Again very normal for laminated sleeves of this age. The top left corner has quite a strong crease reaching from the spine to the "L" in Zeppelin. As you will see from the picture there is a small white sticker below the "Led" on the front face. It looks like it can be removed but I do not want to risk it. It looks like a fairly recent addition, madness. A brown dirt line just above the blimp and some other brown marks reaching down from the top edge, again may clean but I do not want to attempt. Some ring wear is visible under a bright light. The opening edges are a little worn but nothing drastic, is strongly intact. Both spine corners are a little scuffed. There is a little colour uplift on the silver edge at the bottom, about 2/3rds across from the left on the underside. Similar story with the rear face, creases in the laminate some of them with dirt ingress. Some ring wear visible. The original inner sleeve is present and with the correct patent numbers, however it is in quite poor condition with splits on all sides.
Record will be posted in a professional mailer with double stiffners, insured and signed for.
