Jim Murray sang tenor for the Melodaires Quartet of Lansing, Michigan in his early years. He joined the Orrells in the early 1960s, then relocated to Dallas, Texas in 1964 where JD Sumner gave him a job at Stamps Quartet Music Company. Around that same time, he began singing with the Stamps Trio.
When Jake Hess formed the Imperials in 1966, Murray was selected as the group's original tenor singer. He would remain with the Imperials for the next 20 years as they transitioned from a very traditional male quartet to one of the leading vocal groups in the emerging contemporary Christian market.
Murray also sang tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band from 1987-1992 and Vocal Edition in the late 1990s, recording a few solo albums during this time period as well. He sang with the Classic Imperials for several months in 2006
