The Best of Mississippi John Hurt (Live In Concert) 2 LP Set STEREO Vanguard 1971 VSD-19/20 Matrix #s XSV 222693, 222694, 222695, 222696

Although the title indicates it some sort of compilation, it is not. It was recorded live in concert on April 15, 1965. This album is the only evidence one would need to prove John Hurt's status as an American treasure was warranted. I forgot how good this cat was. There is some excellent delta blues fingerpicking and Hurt's voice is smooth and accessible. Authentic stuff from a man, who at the time of this recording was aging, but close to the top of his game. His guitar playing is understated and exquisite. Recorded live at Oberlin College.

Both records are in EX+ to NM condition. Both play perfectly with minimum surface noise and visually display little or no scratches/scuffs. The cover exhibits the kind of flaws one would expect from 50 year old cardboard. Light ringwear, small dings and wear on the corners. There is an approximate 1 inch seam split on the bottom starting from the bottom-right edge of the front of the gatefold cover. There is a small dent about 3 inches beyond that.
