Commonly shortened simply to Ziggy Stardust The album's two predecessors, The Man Who Sold the World and Hunky Dory, only hinted at the androgynous extravagance and grandiose aesthetic to come. With Ziggy Stardust, however, Bowie clearly rivaled contemporaries such as Mark Bolan (T.Rex), Roxy Music and Gary Glitter for supremacy over the glam rock movement, which essentially fused catchy guitar rock with showmanship and a theatrical performance, and a heightened sense of scintillating sexuality and gendered fashion.

Additionally, Ziggy Stardust marks the first time Bowie has ventured into enduring conceptual territory. Much like Peter Gabriel's incarnation of his creations with Genesis (albeit in a different genre), Bowie starred as Ziggy Stardust, an orange-haired bisexual rock star savior from another planet, and that character (so than Bowie's sudden but perfectly timed announcement). he was gay) certainly helped spark controversy and interest in the project. And although Ziggy's story began and ended with this album, the facade remained for several albums thereafter, with Bowie describing 1973's Aladdin Sane as "Ziggy Comes to America".
