Following the original all-star version of the Jazz Messengers and preceding the Lee Morgan-Benny Golson band of late 1958, the group that drummer Art Blakey led in 1957 has tended to be overlooked. Featuring altoist Jackie McLean and trumpeter Bill Hardman, this particular outfit soon set the standard for the many versions of the Jazz Messengers that would follow, featuring originals by Blakey's young sidemen, hard-swinging ensembles and increasingly distinctive solos. This hard-to-find LP is worth the search.
