Lively, punchy, angry, smart, and a whole lot of fun, “Document” shows the band taking everything that worked in “Life’s Rich Pageant” and expanding upon it while including messages, subliminal or not, about how messed up the USA was back in those days. These messages are helped infinitely by the consistently excellent writing, great structure, superb composition, and good amount of focus and structure, all of which makes this another classic that proves that R.E.M. has always meant business as a rock band. Even with the cover of “Strange”, the band manages to include an excellent style to make it sound like their own. Overall, this album is not only ambitious, but it’s a near masterpiece that will be remembered as a document of hard times, and never as a simple prop to occupy ones time, as it is anything but simple.
