Blondie is the debut studio album by American rock band Blondie, released in December 1976 by Private Stock Records. The album reached No. 14 in Australia, where the band had already had a top-3 entry with "In the Flesh". The album also charted at No. 75 in the UK in early 1979, where the band had become immensely popular. Through the production of Richard Gottehrer, who had worked with the Angels and other artists of the 1950s and 1960s, much of the music is suffused with the girl group sound of that era. Debbie Harry told an interviewer in 1978 that the band never intended to be retro and when some journalists described them that way, it was "quite a shock". Likewise she rejected any attempt to brand the music as pop, insisting that Blondie played new wave music. In 2020, Rolling Stone included Blondie at number 401 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
THIS COPY is a Terre Haute 1st Pressing from 1977 on the Private Stock label (see Notes, below). Of interest is the fact that in mid 1977, the band switched to Chrysalis Records, making the Private Stock pressing somewhat rare. I must also note that it is Wikipedia that says this album was released in January 1977. Discogs, on the other hand, says it was released in December of 1976. Also, 1976 is the date that appears on the back cover. However, the only listings in Discogs for 1976 are for a test pressing and a promo copy. Not sure what this all means, although my guess is that the 1977 date is probably more correct from the "when it hit the stores" viewpoint.
The vinyl has some light marks / scratches, but per a test listen, none that affect playback. The vinyl is in Very Good [VG] condition. The original cover has some ring wear and edge rubbing from the shelf (before being bagged in poly). It is in Very Good [VG] condition. The inner sleeve is believed to be original, but it is only plain white, with squared off corners and a center label hole. It has a tear from the center hole on one side (see photo) and some corner wrinkles. It is in Good condition, but I will also include a brand new plain white inner sleeve.
NotesOriginal Terre Haute pressing with
large pressing ring, "BLONDIE" in large lettering above spindle hole,
track listings below the spindle hole.
Different label design versions on the original 1977 Private Stock release vary
by pressing plant.
Later pressings have "BLONDIE" in smaller lettering with track
listings above and below spindle hole.
