Mint (M) Absolutely perfect in every way. Still sealed.
Near Mint (NM) A nearly perfect record. Used, but looks just as if you just got it home from the record shop and removed the shrink wrap. I VERY rarely use this grading.
Excellent (Exc) An EXCELLENT record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may have slight scuffs that might subtly affect one's listening experiences, if at all. In general, if not for a couple little things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint.
Very Good (VG) Has more pronounced defects than an excellent graded record. Surface noise may be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. These records may have light scratches which will slightly affect the sound. LP covers may have a little wear, writing, tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. This condition grading is still acceptable to all but the most fussy of record collectors.
Good (G), Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it may have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve may have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
Poor (P) The record is scratched, may be warped, and may not play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split and or heavily marred by wear and writing.
A '+' or a '-' sign after the grading indicates the higher or lower end of the grading level
