The Meters were an American Funk band based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Meters performed and recorded their own music from the late 1960s until 1977. The band played an influential role as backing musicians for other artists, including Lee Dorsey, Robert Palmer, and Dr. John. The Meters acted as the house band for Allen Toussaint's legendary New Orleans Soul classics of the '60s and are responsible for bringing New Orleans second line grooves into popular music.  The Meters' sound is defined by an earthy combination of tight melodic grooves and highly syncopated New Orleans "second-line" rhythms under highly charged guitar and keyboard riffing.  The "Hand Clapping Song" appears on the album Stuttin' in 1970. In October 2013, The Meters were announced as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees. The Meters formed in 1965 with a line-up of keyboardist and vocalist Art Neville, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, bassist  George Porter Jr. and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. They were later joined by percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville.

Records that we offer are vintage pressings--we do not sell contemporary reissues or bootlegs--and they are all professionally handled throughout each stage of the auction process . All of our 45's are shipped in either their original or new white polylined sleeves in sturdy cardboard mailers with appropriate filler.  Each record is visually graded prior to shipping, sometimes a few tracks are tested, or we may play in it's entirety.

Here's our grading system.

SS (Still Sealed)

Unopened records, still in original shrink wrap.  In original manufactured condition unless otherwise noted (i.e. evidence of mildew or bent corners, etc.)  OLD TOWN RECORDS does not sell re-sealed records.  If we have ANY suspicion that a sealed record is a re-seal or has sustained significant damage, we open it for inspection and grading!

M (Mint)

The record and sleeve are in perfect, original condition.  The record may have been played but will have no evidence of deterioration.  If we use this grade at all, the record WILL live up to it!  A mint sleeve will be just that:  perfect!

M- (Near Mint)

A very clean record.  Near mint except for slight, superficial scuffs.  Sleeves in this condition may have marginal defects, but will not have significant creases or splits.

VG+ (Very Good Plus)

A well-cared-for record that is noticeably less than perfect, but defects are not visually or audibly distracting.  Record surfaces may have slight scuffs or light scratches, but are still primarily clean.  Sleeves may have some creases or minor ring wear, but should not be split.  Will satisfy all but the most demanding collector.

VG (Very Good)

A used, reasonable copy to play.  Many of the defects found in a VG+ copy will be more pronounced in VG condition.  Surface noise may be evident and sleeves may look worn, but the record is still a decent copy.

VG- (Very Good)

A well-worn record that is still playable.  Good does not necessarily mean "bad" but a record in this condition will have audible distractions and may have visible groove wear.  Sleeves may have all manner of defects, but are still intact.

G (Good) and F (Fair)

These grades are for beat-up records. We only sell records in these grades if they are extremely rare and sought-after.
