For those who collect the early Uncle Josh 78 RPM records by pioneer recording artist and home-spun humorist, Cal Stewart, I thought I would list my offering here. This is an original 1908, 170 page book of Uncle Josh Weathersby's Punkin Centre Stories as authored by Cal Stewart. This is the talking machine edition so if you have the corresponding record to one of the stories, you can follow right along with the book. Many of the stories that can be found on records are here including, Uncle Josh in Society, Uncle Josh in a Chinese Laundry, Uncle Josh in a Department Store and so on. There are 38 stories in total plus a life sketch of the author. The book is written the way the stories were spoken by Uncle Josh on the records. For example, "Wall, fer a long time I had my mind made up that I'd cum down to New York." You get the idea. In my personal opinion, I found the book more enjoyable as the records move along at a fast pace with the acoustic recordings not easy to discern and you don't have to put up with Uncle Josh's excessive cackling. The condition of this book is above average for the age. The cover shows minimal wear. The spine and binding are intact. Some of the pages were creased by the original owner so the book will open up flat in some places. There is no writing in this book. page 14 shows a small tear at the bottom. The pages are clean with an age spot here and there. The page edges show yellowing. Overall, a very nice copy of this 107 year old book. This book has been in my possession for 30 years. There are new reprints available on ebay if you're just interested in reading the stories. The original would make a nice display piece for the antique phonograph and 78 RPM record collector.
