Vinyl LP Record Grading Guidelines

Over several years of grading tens of thousands of records, Bridgetown Records has developed an accurate – and conservative – scale for grading the condition of vinyl records and their jackets.

All recordings are visually inspected under high-intensity lights.

Condition

Explanation

Mint (M)

The record is sealed - virgin vinyl - brand new. There are no surface marks and no deterioration in sound quality.

Any booklets, lyric sheets, posters or extra items are accounted for and in perfect condition.

This cover also looks new. Typically, Mint is reserved for "sealed" records.

Near Mint (Or Mint Minus)

The vinyl is like new! It is glossy, with no visible defects and little evidence of having been played.

Any extra items should be present and in like new condition.

The cover may have slight shelf wear but shouldn't have creases, seam splits or folds.

Excellent (E)

The record has minor signs of having been played, but should sound great. There are no significant surface marks or scratches.

The extra items are included, with minimal wear.

The cover may have slight edge or corner wear.

Very Good Plus (VG plus)

Generally the same as excellent, as these are interchangeable, though the VG plus rating may include records with slightly more visible signs of use and handling.

The cover may have light edge or corner wear.

Very Good (VG)

The record has been enjoyed many times but still has good sound quality; there may be slight surface marks, such as scuffs, that are noticeable and a few light scratches.

Any extra items may or may not be present.

The cover has some ring, edge and/or corner wear from being used, as do any extra items.

Good Plus (G+)

The record has been played often, and the sound quality is noticeably deteriorated from some mild scuffs or scratches.

The cover may have distinct folding lines, scuffed edges, discoloration, and/or split seams.
