"The Diodes debuted at the art school on a dark and snowy night near the end of January 1977. Inside, bright white spotlights generated heat and a blinding glare around the stage. The gym was packed with sweaty art students. A huge mirror beside the drum kit reflected the spots, the band, the students, and a screaming crew of supporters who rushed around the footlights, popping flash bulbs and supplying the video monitors onstage with live images. At the center of this heat and light, the DIODES paced the stage continually, weaving chaotic trajectories through the equipment strewn around them.
They roared through their set with a sort of weird hysterical pleasure. Songs began and ended abruptly amid peals of feedback. Somebody pulled the fire alarm but nobody noticed because the band was so loud.
The DIODES sang a song: ". . . I wanna be a Midnight Movie Star, I wanna be a New Cult Hero. . .", and they got their wish. After the spectacle of their debut, they opened their club, the Crash'n'Burn, featured in a film of the same name, made some records, and a few years later, disappeared down the dark maw of the media."
