Early in the 20th century, phonograph records were available to the public but were too expensive for a lot of people to afford. Then Little Wonder Records came along. They cranked out hundreds of short recordings at a price that was a fraction of the big labels'. Many of the recordings did not list the artist, and sometimes these anonymous contributors became famous later.
They sold a ton of records but this success was fairly short-lived, as the big record companies did what big companies do- they dropped their prices and drove Little Wonder out of business since it couldn't compete on quality alone.
In researching these records, I found that they contain numbers in the "runoff" (the area between the label and the grooves). Sometimes the numbers are stamped, and other times they are hand-etched. Numbers in the format xxx-x are the "take number." Other numbers may represent the record number, or other mysterious things. You can probably tell that I'm not much of an expert in this area.
Both of these records have patent information stamped on the back. There are usually six patents listed, with dates beginning around 1901 and ending around 1909.
As noted above, I don't have the necessary equipment to play these records, so I'm not making any representation as to how well they will play.
#1019- "Eilleen Allanna" (Violin Solo). The number 1019 is stamped on the runoff
#1247- "Rings" (Tenor Duet). 1247 is stamped on the runoff.
Here's an opportunity to start a Little Wonder collection, or fill a few holes in your existing collection!
