Record Grading Scale

M "Mint"  The record is pristine, unplayed, no surface scuffing. Always verified by test play and guaranteed to play noise free and distortion free on your audiophile system. The cover appears brand new, no edge wear no surface wear.

NM "Near mint",  the record appears brand new, perhaps unplayed. Play should be distortion free. The cover appears like new, crisp edges and corners.

EX "excellent" a few minor surface scuffs and perhaps an inaudible hairline scratch but has no visible groove wear. Play should be distortion free. Background noise will be minimal, perhaps no more than a few light ticks between tracks, obviously a record played infrequently and/or previously played on high quality equipment. The cover appears not far from new, may have a corner crease or two, minimal surface wear, no split seams.

VG+ "very good plus" some minor surface scratches and indications the record was previously played.  VG+ should satisfy most listeners, except for the most demanding audiophile. The background noise and distortion if any, will be very low. The label may have a spindle trail, or slight spindle wear. The cover shows light use and minor edge wear, minor surface wear. The artwork is not faded and still visually appealing, no split seams.

VG "Very good" is the typical used record with some expected surface wear and groove wear. Play will be reasonably clean with some expected distortion, and background noise but well below music level. The label may have indications of wear and spindle wear may also be present, an indication the record was previously played on a record changer. The cover shows signs of frequent use, some edge wear and corner wear, a slightly raised record ring, the artwork still can be enjoyed. There may be a seam split up to about 3 inches, but never a full split.

VG- "Very good minus" as VG but less visual appeal, but still plays reasonably well. The cover may have two seam splits.

G  "good"  I do not offer this grade, however "good" plays through the continuous groove without skipping, (thus said to be good) Otherwise in the world of records, good is not good. The record produces distortion and noise, but not overwhelming the music. The cover is functional but shows advanced wear. There may be seam splits, but the record does not fall out of the cover.

"Bad" the record may skip, major warp or other issue that renders the record unplayable. Play produces more noise than music, loud crackles and hiss, a worn out record. The cover fails to contain the record, falling apart.

Records are graded visually under direct bright lighting. Some records are test played on a quality turntable with a light tracking magnetic cartridge.
