This is an extremely rare vintage mechanical wind-up toy from the former Soviet Union, which shows the Sputnik satellite orbiting the Earth. Start a toy with a key, and the satellite rotates around the Earth. A unique feature of the toy is the sound effects. As the satellite orbits the Earth, a bell rings and then, after a second or two of pauses, it repeats that the satellite is broadcasting back to Earth so that observers around the globe can see and hear the satellite. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and became the first country to orbit a satellite. This is the only event which marked the beginning of the space race. The toy is in good condition and fully operational. A cult toy from the very beginning of the space race.
