The tune is intermittently interrupted by a series of beeps that represent the ones transmitted by Sputnik.

An inscription on the base translates to ‘Made in the USSR’. Produced in the 1960s, this music box highlights the impact Sputnik had on world events, with items such as this one becoming highly collectible for space enthusiasts. The spacecraft named Sputnik after the Russian word” Sputnik", was launched on October 4, 1957 at 10: 29 Moscow time from the Tyuratam cosmodrome in the Kazakh Republic. The satellite was 22 inches in diameter, about the size of a beach ball, weighed 184 pounds, and circled Earth once every hour and 36 minutes. Moving at 18,000 miles per hour, its elliptical orbit had an apogee (farthest point from Earth) of 584 miles and a perigee (closest point) of 143 miles.


Visible through binoculars before sunrise or after sunset, the Satellite transmitted radio signals to Earth that were strong enough to be picked up by amateur radio operators.
