Record grading is done primarily visually. I don't use Mint unless the item is still in its factory shrink wrap. If a record is listed as NM, it looks new. If it is VG+, it will have a couple of minor flaws - a light scuff or two on the vinyl, very light wear on the label. VG will have some more flaws, but nothing serious. At G+, the scuffs become scratches, and the wear can be significant. However, you can expect that it will still play pretty well. At G, expect the record to look pretty beat up and play with a lot of noise, but still be playable.
