(:52) Down the Field (:53) The Tennessee Band program, which was organized immediately after* the Civil War when the University of^Tennessee reopened, bSsan enrollment of 400 students that -participate in the Marching Band, Varsity Band, Concert and -Campus Bands, and the Wind Ensemble. The University of Tennessee Marching Band has been dubbed "The Pride of the Southland." With precision and pageantry, the high- stepping music makers afford entertainment for more than three- quarters of a million spectators during the football season. The Pride of the Southland Band has represented the State of Tennessee at the Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon ’(two times), and Carter Inaugurat- ‘ ions. The organization has -appeared at the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl (three times), Sugar Bowl (four times), the Orange Bowl (twice), the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl (twice), the Gator Bowl (four times), and at the Liberty Bowl (twice.) The organization has made twenty-five television appearances in the past twelve years. As innovator of the circle drills, the Tennessee Band has influenced high school and university bands across America. Dr. W.J. Julian has been Directorof Bands at Tennessee for the past sixteen years. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Associa- tion, President-elect of the National Band Association, President of the Southern Division of the College Band Directors National Associa- tion, Past President of the Tennessee Music Educators Association, and founder of the Tennessee Bandmasters Associa- tion. He has served as clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor in thirty-five states, and in Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Under Dr. Julian's direction, the University of Tennesse Band has gained a reputation as one of the nation's outstanding musical organizations.
