ASCAP To start out by saying that I'm rather particular as to "who" or "what" I endorse would be an understatement. I'm a professional entertainer and have been close to twenty years, five years plus being with the famed Grand Ole Opry show of country music fame. My first introduction to the Happy Goodman Family was at one of the all night Gospel sings being presented at Mt. Vernon, Illinois, fourteen years ago. This is a farm community some twenty odd miles north of my home, a farm and coal mining community. My father and most of the menfolk rela- tives were miners. Why paint this kind of picture to you when it's not my family I'm supposed to be writing about? Only to impress upon you something you probably already realize — a close kinship between country and Gospel music! Two of the best items that I have as a recording artist are my Gospel Guitar albums with Decca Record Company. I thor- oughly enjoy playing and listening to Gospel music. My friends, the Goodmans, fully realize this and, after having listened to my Gospel guitar, asked Russell Sims, headman for Sims Rec- ords, to call me in on their sessions. This sometimes is a little time consuming and costly on their part because I find myself listening and forgetting to play. It's no wonder Sister Vestal has been voted "Queen of Gospel Music 1964" and don't think for a second the surrounding Goodmans aren't real proud of her. And what a circus sometime listening to Rusty, Sam and Happy argue over the best approach in arranging each song. This, of course, is always in good fun and it's just that ... a lot of fun for the supporting musicians to be witnessing and taking a part of. Nowhere in this wonderful country of ours is there a better, more devoted Gospel singing group than these Goodmans. Yes, we have other greats in the Gospel field, quite a few being my close personal friends, and they back me up by saying "Listen close, Brothers and Sisters and rejoice to some of the most in- spiring, soul lifting singing this side of Heaven, the Happy Goodmans.'7 Gotta Travel On, Billy Grammer Recorded at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, December 2, 3, 1964. Musicians: Autry Inman — Bass Fiddle Willie Ackerman — Drums David L. Jones — Organ Billy Grammer — Guitar Walter Haynes — Guitar Hargus Robbins — Piano Engineer — Selby Coffman Produced by Russell Sims
