Mint (M) A Mint (M) record and cover are absolutely perfect in every way. The record has never been played.
Near Mint (NM) A Near Mint (NM) record is nearly perfect. It may have been played, but it has no visible defects. The label does not have writing, stickers, "spindle marks," or other markings. Basically, the record looks like it just came from a retail store and was just opened. The cover does not have creases, ring wear, seam splits, cut-out markings, or other visible defects.
Very Good Plus (VG+), Excellent (EX) A Very Good Plus (VG+) or, slightly better, Excellent (EX) record may show some slight signs of wear, including slight scuffs, light scratches, and/or slight warps. The label may have "spindle marks," but the center hole will not be misshapen. The label and/or cover may have minor writing, stickers, and/or tape. The cover may have slight creases, turned-up corners, scratches, discoloration, stains, ring wear, and/or seam wear, a minor seam split, and/or a cut-out marking. Basically, the record and cover have been taken care of and would be close to NM except for some slight defects.
Very Good (VG) The defects in a Very Good (VG) record are more obvious, including groove wear and/or light scratches that may be deep enough to feel with a fingernail. The label and/or cover may have more obvious writing, stickers, tape, and/or residue. The cover may have more obvious creases, folded corners, scratches, discoloration, stains, ring wear, seam wear, and/or seam splits.
Good (G), Good Plus (G+) A Good (G) or, slightly better, Good Plus (G+) record may have significant groove wear and/or scratches. The label and/or cover may have heavy writing, stickers, tape, and/or residue that are starting to overwhelm it. The cover may have significant ring wear, seam splits, and/or other signs of heavy wear.
Poor (P), Fair (F) A Poor (P) or, slightly better, Fair (F) record may not be playable. It may be cracked, broken, and/or very badly warped. The cover may be water-damaged and/or significantly split on all three seams.
