The marching band, with an enrollment of more than 300 students from all colleges of the Univer- sity, has gained a national reputation due in part to its eighteen television appearances in the past five years. Besides representing the State of Tennessee at the Eisenhower, Johnson, and Nixon Inaugurations (the last time, being the honor band), the organization has appeared at the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl (three times), Sugar Bowl (four times), the Orange Bowl (twice), the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl (twice), the Gator Bowl (four times), and at the Liberty Bowl. As innovator of the circle drills, the Tennessee Band has influenced high school and university bands across America. The band has gained a reputation as one of the nation’s outstanding musical organizations. Dr. W. J. Julian has been director of the organization for the past 13 years. The assistant direct- or is Walter McDaniel, and the arranger is Barry McDonald. When the University of Tennessee Marching Band takes the field, the crowd reaction truly indicates that it is the "Pride of the Southland."
