I have to admit I was skeptical when I listened to this record for the first time since I bought it used from someplace I don't remember. "Digital from the early 80s, are you kidding me?" my internal analog snob was saying. And yet on my modest system of a vintage Rega Planar2/Grado Black, Rega Brio, Tellurium cables, and vintage KEF 102.3s, it sounds quite satisfying, so much so that I wish more orchestral recordings sounded like this, apparently miked from some distance in the hall and not smack dab on top of the musicians, which to my hearing is the aural equivalent of the scene in "Trains, Planes, and Automobiles" in which a broken car seat has Steve Martin's nose pressed against the windshield. If the bass drum thwacks on side 2 don't have you phoning your vet for a refill of the cat's anti-anxiety meds, you should seriously consider updating your system. The surfaces are pristine, the cover is in very good shape, notwithstanding a few minor rough spots. Maazel and the Clevelanders, of course, are inspired.
