Hilo Hattie At The Hawaiian Village Hotel Tapa Room Live Vinyl LP Record VG+

Recorded Live in the Tapa Room of the Hawaiian Village Hotel with the Hawaiian Village Serenaders SIDE ONE ANY TIME; PALOLO WHEN HILO HATTIE DOES THE HILO HOP COCKEYED MAYOR RED OPU PRINCESS PUPULE THAT’S THE HAWAIIAN IN ME HOLOHOLO KAA TELEVISION SIDE TWO HAWAIIAN WAR CHANT BECKY CHINA NIGHTS (SHINANO YORU) TAHITIAN Hilo Hattie has long been known as the “Clown Princess of Hawaii.” For many years she has been spreading throughout the world her comedy versions of the lore and lure of the Hawaiian Islands. Although she is known and has been seen and heard by millions, this album is Hilo Hattie’s first LP and it is sure to add many more fans to her long list of international followers. Recorded live at the Tapa Room of the beautiful Hawaiian Village Hotels on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, this recording authentically captures Hilo Hattie’s unique brand of humor. You can easily visualize the unpreten- tious comedy in numbers like “Becky” and “Red Opu,” the hip swinging and exaggerated movements of her “Holoholo Kaa,” and the audience reaction and participation in such numbers as “Anytime” and “Hawaiian War Chant.” Dur- ing “China Nights,” when she makes a complete hair style and costume change, you can almost see her transforming into a Japanese mama-san right there on the stage in front of you. Hilo Hattie, whose real name is Clara Nelson, started out in life as a school teacher and continued this occupa- tion for 16 years in her native Hawaii. When, as an avoca- tion, entertaining became increasingly time consuming, it became apparent that Hattie would have to make a choice between teaching and performing. She was convinced by the Dean of Teachers College that her forte was the show world. Hattie went to Los Angeles, and as a result of her kaleidoscopic performances there, was invited on to New York for an engagement at the Hawaiian Room of the posh St. Regis. Her first appearance with Harry Owens and his famed Royal Hawaiians was at the Paramount Theatre in Los Angeles. Later the group moved to the Mural Room of San Francisco’s St. Francis where they blossomed as perennials and Hilo Hattie developed as an integral facet of the Harry Owens TV Show. Radio played almost as large a part in Hattie’s life, as did the making of motion pictures. Her first film was “The Song of the Islands,” which was followed by many others including “Miss Tatlock’s Millions,” “Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki” and a straight dramatic role in “Hell's Raiders.” Television, however, constributed more toward bringing Hilo Hattie to the attention of the public than any other medium. On this recording Hilo Hattie is introduced by Jimmy Moikeha, the singing star of the Tapa Room. Backing her musically and vocally are the very popular Hawaiian Vil- lage Serenaders, who have been a permanent part of the entertainment at the Hawaiian Village Hotels for more than five years. Entertainers and recording stars in their own right, they exemplify the fine musicianship and vocal har- mony found in the islands. Sit back in your “noho” with a tall glass of “Okolehao” and imagine yourself in the Polynesian atmosphere of the colorful Tapa Room, and you will be ready to listen and enjoy this incomparable performance of Hawaii’s own and beloved HILO HATTIE.
