Grading for my LP auctions follow the Goldmine Price Guides, as below. Unless otherwise stated in the auction ad, I play grade with a needle drop at the beginning and prior to the last track of each side. Visible flaws are checked for skipping. I am a very conservative grader – I would rather have my buyers pleasantly pleased than upset.
Additionally, I have been collecting records since I was ten years old in 1961. In my experience, the record labels did not seem to care as much about the quality of vinyl used in popular and (particularly) rock & roll pressings, especially their budget label releases. While RCA may have specified a higher quality vinyl for their Red Seal pressings, they probably thought that Elvis’ fans would never notice the difference.
I carefully inspect still-sealed albums for any indication of warpage or any damage incurred by storage, and provide images that show the LP laying on a flat surface from at least two different angles. I will also note if I believe the LP has been resealed.
MINT (M)
A mint condition LP is absolutely perfect in every way. I will very rarely advertise a record as being mint.
NEAR MINT (NM OR M-)
When played, a Near Mint record will do so without surface noise. NM records are shiny, and free of visible defects. No writing, stickers, other markings or spindle marks appear on the label. No major factory defects are present.
NM covers have no creases, ring wear or seam splits of any kind.
VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+)
VG+ records may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that don’t affect the sound are OK. Marks around the center hole are OK.
VG+ Covers might have some very minor seam wear or a split (less than one inch long) at the bottom. Also, a VG+ cover may have some defacing, such as a cut-out marking.
VERY GOOD (VG)
VG records remain a fine listening experience. They lack most of their original glossy surface. Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and ending, but the noise won’t overpower the music. Labels may have minor writing, tape or stickers.
VG covers will have many signs of handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover, where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious; it may appear on all three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someone might have written on it or stamped a price tag on it, too.
GOOD (G)
Good does not mean bad! The record plays through without skipping, but has significant surface noise and groove wear. The label is worn and exhibits significant ring wear, heavy writing or obvious damage caused by trying to remove tape or stickers.
A Good cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing, such as huge radio station letters written across the front to deter theft.
POOR (P) AND FAIR (F)
Fair records may skip when played, with significant surface noise and groove wear. The label is worn and exhibits significant ring wear, heavy writing or obvious damage caused by trying to remove tape or stickers.
Poor records are cracked, impossibly warped or skip and/or repeat when an attempt is made to play them. Covers are heavily damaged.
