Up for auction here is an acetate record of The Beatles- Crying, Waiting, Hoping from 1964. It was originally recorded during their BBC Live Sessions. It came from the collection of a music publisher friend of mine who has since passed away.
This is a rare pre-production version of the record, meant for checking sound quality or promoting ahead of the release. This acetate has never been sold on eBay before, and this is the first it has surfaced for auction online.
An acetate is a record made of aluminum, covered in nitrocellulose lacquer. Blank, they’re referred to as a “platter”, and a record lathe is used to inscribe audio onto them. They’re often used for the purposes of EQ testing or review by internal label staff/band management. Phil Spector was known to throw his away after one listen.
Acetates are tough to grade, but seeing as the surface is nearly flawless, I’ve given it a Near Mint Minus (NM-). The record plays through nicely with no prevalence of skipping or popping. This is a one sided record, with the other one being blank. Because of its age and the time it was recorded, it plays at 78RPM.
