Derek and the Dominos were a blues rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton, keyboardist and singer Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon. They had previously played together in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. Dave Mason supplied additional lead guitar on early studio sessions and played at their first live gig.
The band released only one studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The album went on to receive critical acclaim, but initially faltered in sales and in radio airplay. Although released in 1970 it was not until March 1972 that the album's single "Layla" (a tale of unrequited love inspired by Clapton's relationship with his friend George Harrison's wife, Pattie Boyd) made the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album, which has received praise from critics and fans alike, is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career. Layla featured slide guitar from guest guitarist Duane Allman, who contributed powerful work on most of the cuts on the album.
Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs peaked at #16 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album again made the Billboard 200 in 1972, 1974 and in 1977. In 2011, it was charted in Britain, peaking at No. 68.
In 2000, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2003, television network VH1 named Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs the 89th-greatest album of all time, and Rolling Stone ranked it number 226 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Critic Robert Christgau ranked Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs the 3rd-greatest album of the 1970s.
"Deeply in love with his best friend George Harrison's wife, Eric Clapton came up with an album of love-tortured blues that gets a kick from guest Duane Allman, the rare guitarist who could challenge him." - Rolling Stone
"[W]hat really makes Layla such a powerful record is that Clapton, ignoring the traditions that occasionally painted him into a corner, simply tears through these songs with burning, intense emotion. He makes standards like 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman' and 'Nobody Knows You (When You're Down and Out)' into his own, while his collaborations with Bobby Whitlock -- including 'Any Day' and 'Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?' -- teem with passion. And, considering what a personal album Layla is, it's somewhat ironic that the lovely coda 'Thorn Tree in the Garden' is a solo performance by Whitlock, and that the song sums up the entire album as well as 'Layla' itself." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, allmusic.com, Rated 5/5 Stars
