About The Artist A student of the great Heinrich Neuhaus (teacher of Gilels and Richter), Vladimir Leyetchkiss began his piano studies in the Soviet city of Baku Following his postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory, Mi Leyetchkiss' Soviet concert activities coincided with the State Publication of his many piano transcriptions of orchestral works. His solo piano version of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" elicited the enthusiastic approval of the composer himself Hearing Leyetchkiss play shortly after his emigration to the United States in 1974, Vladimir Ashkenazy welcomed him as "an impressive pianist, a gifted, versatile and sensitive musician" His first recordings in the United States, consisting of Russian piano music (Scriabin, Taneyev, Prokofiev. Balakirev, Borodin and Stravinsky), were warmly received by American critics. Hailed as a "big style emigre Russian pianist," Mr. Leyetchkiss has been cited for the "poetry, warmth and insight" of his playing. His transcription of "The Rite of Spring" is being prepared for publication by G Schirmer He played in Paris ot the invitation of the Concert Management “Fugues" His New York debut took place in January, 1984 This recital brought forth the following critics' comments: "remarkable music making The fifty-five minute Diabelli Variations of Beethoven dispelled the widely held contention that Russians can't play the Germans. Here was resounding, large scale beauty where the music demanded, and appropriate pomposity and humor in the piece's weaker moments Leyetchkiss' fingers can do anything, and he executed a number of highly original and brilliantly musical tasks with almost casual ease Leyetchkiss' teacher was Heinrich Neuhausand the same stamp of tradition he gave his other pupils, Richter and Gilels, was very much in evidence throughout the recital at Merkin Hall The encores included a thunderous version of Liszt-Schubert's "Erlkonig in which one could hear the very words of the poem All in all, this was a rare recital • incredibly enough, a debut and an occasion which made the listener think as much as feel ” . .(Musical America' "A genuine virtuoso","Novoye Russkoye Slovo (New York Russian Daily) "Big, burly technique and generous musical instincts" New York Times Some comments on previous recordings: "His playing has that splendid fluidity associated with Neuhaus best students " Fanfare 'Leyetchkiss' performances are on a big scale " Stereo Review Other recordings by Vladimir Leyetchkiss: ORS 80378 Taneyev Pre!ude & Fugue.
