"Puente In Puerto Rico" is an exeiting event. The foremost purveyor of Latin-American music is as popular on this island as he is stateside. The people of Puerto Rico know that Puente understands their music. They know, too, that he plays it with the authenticity of a native of the island, although he is a native New Yorker.
Actually, Tito Puente began his career as an exhibition dancer while still in his teens. Fate played a hand when he accidentally suffered a torn tendon in one ankle and could no longer continue as a professional dancer. Endowed with an inherent feel for music and completely taken by show business, Puente turned to music. He quickly mastered the piano, alto saxophone and a number of other varied instruments. It was, however, as a percussionist and vibe player that he became best known. After a number of jobs as a sideman with Noro Morales, and Pupi Compo, and studying composition and arranging in his spare time, Puente organized his first band in the 1940s. Since then, he has pioneered in the Latin-American dance field and contributed to the acceptance in this country of such dances as the cha cha cha, merengue, pachanga and quite recently, the Bossa Nova.
Tito Puente has played everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the famed "jazz corner of the world", Birdland. Of all his performances, this one in Puerto Rico is perhaps the most memorable. Here, he once again asserts his mastery in the field as he leads his vigorous aggregation through some of the most irresistible Latin-American rhythms ever waxed.
Recorded live, on-the-spot, "Puente In Puerto Rico" is an outstanding highlight in the career of this distinguished musician and maestro.
