Most LP's are planned to include many different dance tempos so as to avoid mo-notony. In "Son Con Guaguanco" we also strived for variety, but not in the usual way.
Celia Cruz's title "The (please pronounce as thee) Guarachera" relates not to the guaracha tempo per se, but to Celia's uncomparable ability to improvise on any swinging or funky tempo (Guaracha, Guaguanco, Mambo, Guajira, Cha Cha Cha, etc.) usually before and/or after the montuno motiff is sung by the "Coro" (Chorus).
To showcase her "guarachera" talent, we purposely picked from over eighty original compositions the most swinging twelve. Eventually we ended up with thirteen num-bers, because "Es La Humanidad" written by Dr. Eligio Valera, turned up and hit our repertoire committee (Celia, her husband Pedro Knight, Charlie Palmieri, Tito Puente and myself) as such a beautiful bolero that we had to include it in this "Son Con Guaguanco" album. The 13th omitted number is scheduled to be included in our next LP by "La Guarachera"
The hypothetical question, then is, "Where is the variety, if admittedly 11/12th's of the tempos are all swinging?" Well, I'll tell you, man...... listen to the arrange-ments, the compositions, the band and mostly to Celia, and you'll hear the variety in them all. This was accomplished by procuring the services of many top-notched Cats to assist in planning, composing, arranging and recording "Son Con Guaguanco".
Four arrangers... Charlie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Louis Ramirez and Bobby Valentin; six renown composers... Arsenio Rodriguez, Chivirico Davila, Heny Alvarez, Rudy Calzado, Jose Claro Fumero, and Miguel Angel Amadeo; three excellent Coro's ...
Santitos Colon, Willie Torres and Chivirico Davila; the cream of the crop musicians (beside those mentioned above) ... Victor Paz, Kako, Bobby Rodriguez, Puchi, Mario Rivera, Dandy, Malave, etc., Two engineers... Frank Kulaga and Fred Weinberg, and so on ... The variety of orchestral sounds produced by so many cooks not spoiling the soup, inspired Celia to take off on flights of improvised gems. The confidence in her voice is even more unbelievable when you are aware of the fact that she learned thirteen new songs in seven days, while at the same time rehearsing and preparing for a Latin Concert at Lewishon Stadium.
Celia Cruz is the master of her craft, her thorough rhythmic assurance is enhanced by the clarity and power of her expressive and controlled voice. Celia is "LA GUARACHERA" and "SON CON GUAGUANCO" is "LA GUARACHERA" at her best.
