The band's lyrics,which have been described as "dark, melancholy and difficult to interpret", are written and sung by , a . The rest of the band is composed of two pairs of brothers: twins (guitar and keyboard) and (guitar) and (bass) and (drums). The band has recorded six studio albums; the most recent, , was released in May 2013.

History Early History (1991–2000)

In 1991, Matt Berninger and Scott Devendorf met while attending the 's DAAP college of graphic design program, where they also met Mike Brewer, and Jeff Salem. Together, the five of them formed the lo-fi garage band Nancy, named after Berninger's mother, aspiring to sound like . The band was together for five years, but only released one album, Ruther 3429, on Wife Records before breaking up after Berninger, Devendorf, Reas and Salem moved to .

Bryan, Bryce and Aaron were childhood friends who played in several bands together over the years. When their last effort, Project Nim, broke up in 1998, they joined Matt and Scott in Brooklyn via the Devendorf relationship.

When the band was formed in 1999, it was called The National, although the domain name of the band's website is americanmary.com because, according to Matt Berninger in an interview with Sixeyes, "[i]t's a song off our first record. We never thought of changing the (website) name, although we should have." Several of the members continued to work day jobs while performing free Sunday night shows regularly at the highly regarded NYC Lower East Side venue, , throughout the early years, including being involved in New York's in the late 1990s.

The National (2001–2002)

Their first album was eventually released in 2001 on , a label founded by band members , along with their friend . When reviewing the album, Jason MacNeil of wrote, "...The National has created nearly a dozen picture-perfect bar-soaked gems with its debut album. From the opening notes of 'Beautiful Head', the delicate line between polished and has rarely been walked so deliberately with the payoff so favorable.

Packaging :

I take great care during packaging and do each one personally. I use hand cut cardboard, which I get from a trucking company. (It's so thick that you will save it and use it again.) Each piece is 1/4 inch thick and together they are very stronge. I always remove the record from the picture sleeve and ship them inside a clear plastic record sleeve. All packages are marked in red : "Fragile Sticker" on one side and "Do Not Bend" on other both side.

Postage :

You have to pay for the postage.   This record will weigh 6 ounces when ready to ship. US winners can figure out your own postage costs for US First Class or Media Mail with tracking. I will send it through USPS and you will get an email with the tracking number. Overseas winners will get it sent by First Class Mail International. (Buyers from Brazil, France will assume all risks for shipping to your country.) I will send your record as soon as you pay. (same day if before 2 PM and next day if after 2 PM, Monday thru Friday) I will combine postage if you win more than one record. Please wait for my invoice for all of your winnings in one package. ANY EXTRA FEES lNCLUDING CUSTOM FEES WILL BE PAID BY BUYER

M- (Mint Minus) Disc appears to be virtually flawless, and should play as such...

EXCELLENT  (EX) May have fine paper scuff other than look flawless 

VG++ Denotes tiny VISUAL flaw or paper scuff(s) that is cosmetic, or minor markings that cannot be heard

G "Good" Disc has lots of wear, and serious visual abrasions. It should play through without skipping (unless otherwise noted). Condition is generally rough, but is good enough to serve as a "filler" copy until something better comes along. Only the rarest of records will be listed in this condition.

All other defects, such as cut-out holes (CO), stickers and/or writing on the label (SOL / WOL) and warping (wrp) are noted as listed here.

U.S.: Paypal is preferred. Personal checks will have to clear before I ship the item(s). You may also contact me before the end of the auction about other options.
