Formed in 1981, Depeche Mode (Martin Gore, Dave Gahan and Andy Fletcher) have released 13 studio albums that have reached the Top Ten in over 20 countries, including the US and UK, with global album sales in excess of 150 million. Pioneers of the post-punk era, the band's last album, 2013’s Delta Machine, reached the #1 chart spot in 12 countries around the world.
SPEAK & SPELL
Vocalist Dave Gahan, keyboardists Andrew Fletcher and Vince Clarke and guitarist/keyboardist, Martin Gore made their debut in 1981 on Sire Records with the album Speak & Spell. The band's only release with Clarke as an official member and as the main songwriter, Speak & Spell's first two singles – “Dreaming of Me” and “New Life” – laid the groundwork for the success of the album’s third single and Depeche Mode's first Top Ten U.K. hit, “Just Can’t Get Enough.”
A BROKEN FRAME
Vocalist Dave Gahan, guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher issued their sophomore album, A Broken Frame in 1982 on Sire Records. Gore deftly assumed the role of chief songwriter here after the departure of founding member and songwriter Vince Clarke, producing an ambitious collection of songs including their highest charting single up that point with "See You" and further fare like “The Meaning Of Love” and “Leave In Silence.”
CONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN
Depeche Mode issued Construction Time Again on Mute/Sire in 1983, their third full-length effort overall following 1982's A Broken Frame, and the band's first to feature keyboardist and arranger Alan Wilder as a full-time member. The majority of the compelling 9-song set was composed by Gore including the two standout singles “Everything Counts” and “Love In Itself” with exception to "Two Minute Warning" and "The Landscape Is Changing" which were contributed by Wilder.
SOME GREAT REWARD
Depeche Mode's assent and evolution to legendary status started here. Some Great Reward, the band's 1984 industrial/mainstream masterpiece, is largely known for spawning the hit single "People Are People," one of the most familiar and beloved tunes of the '80s. Moody, dark, intelligent, sardonic, and completely in tune with the attitudes of the Reagan-Thatcher era, the touchstone release also features such signature Depeche Mode tracks as "Somebody," "Blasphemous Rumors," and "Master and Servant."
BLACK CELEBRATION
Originally issued on Mute Records in 1984, Black Celebration is the album where Depeche Mode's definitive darker edge sound became fully realized. Sonically, the group began slowly transitioning away from their earlier dance-pop sound on previous two releases Construction Time Again (1983) and Some Great Reward (1984). The 11-song set is an emotionally intense, anthemic masterwork that introduced the classics “Stripped,” “A Question Of Time,” “Fly On The Windscreen,” and the title track and catapulted Depeche Mode into the spotlight for good.
MUSIC FOR THE MASSES
1987's Music For The Masses lived up to its title and then some, underscoring the power and songcraft of Depeche Mode as its popularity exploded and leading to a massive world tour. Produced by David Bascombe fresh off his engineering work on Peter Gabriel's immensely successful album So, the 10-song set was the band's first to break into the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 chart and it was home to more hit singles on the Billboard Hot 100 than any of their prior releases with "Strangelove," "Behind The Wheel," and "Never Let Me Down Again."
VIOLATOR
The crowning glory of the boys' black-leather period! Depeche Mode truly hit their artistic and commercial peak with the release of their sexually charged 1990 alt-classic Violator which confirmed the quartet’s status as international superstars once and for all. Co-produced by Alan Wilder and Flood, the concise and expertly crafted 9-song effort is home to such landmark singles as “Personal Jesus,” “Enjoy the Silence,” “Policy of Truth” and “World In My Eyes.”
SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION
Co-produced by Depeche Mode and Flood, 1993's Songs Of Faith And Devotion finds the band fresh off the massive success of 1990's Violator and in the middle of the burgeoning alternative-rock/grunge movement, reflected here with the use of more guitar than previous releases. In spite of those potential hurdles, Songs Of Faith And Devotion shot straight to No. 1 on both sides of the Atlantic on the strength of the mega-hit single "I Feel You" and further classic fare like "Condemnation," "Walking In My Shoes," and "In Your Room."
ULTRA
Depeche Mode found themselves at a crossroads with the release of 1997's Ultra, their first album in 14 years without Alan Wilder and fresh off the near-fatal drug overdose of frontman Dave Gahan. However, the core trio of Gahan, guitarist/keyboardist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher returned with eleven songs that truly marked a new beginning for the band. Lean and polished, the Tim Simenon-produced effort spawned a bevy of singles including “Barrel Of A Gun” and “It’s No Good.”
EXCITER
Exciter was issued four years after 1997's Ultra which was the band's first album in 14 years without Alan Wilder. Working with producer Mark Bell (Björk), Gahan, Gore and Fletcher recorded 13 songs that refined Depeche Mode’s stunning mix of anthemic hooks, delicate arrangements and passionate songwriting. Hailed by fans as one of the band’s best since the classic Violator, Exciter delivered several strong singles including “Dream On,” “I Feel Loved” and “Freelove.”
PLAYING THE ANGEL (2LP)
An astonishingly fresh, exuberant release, 2005's Playing The Angel marked Depeche Mode's 25th anniversary together. "Precious," the first single from the album, is quintessential Depeche Mode, all cyber pulse and glorious chorus. "The Sinner In Me" perfectly balances the organic and synthetic, and climaxes, as do most of the tracks here, with staccato blasts of noise and FX. On "Suffer Well" Dave's voice is more powerful than ever, as it is throughout the album. "Macrovision," sung by Martin, is supremely shiny hi-tech pop with an enormous hook. The awesome "John The Revelator" is just one of the four hit singles from the album.
SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE (2LP)
Sounds Of The Universe is one of Depeche's lower-key albums, but not without explosive or dramatic moments by any means. The sense of older styles and sounds - classic drum machines, early synthesizers, a rumbling bass undercarriage - serves new purposes. On the whole, Sounds Of The Universe is a grower, relying on a few listens to fully take effect, but when it does, it shows Depeche Mode are still able to combine pop-hook accessibility and their own take on ''roots'' music for an electronic age with sonic experimentation and recombination - not bad for a band with almost three decades under its collective belt.
DELTA MACHINE (2LP)
Depeche Mode's highly anticipated 13th studio album, Delta Machine, was recorded throughout 2012 in Santa Barbara, CA and New York City, and was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. This deluxe 2-LP edition (with 4 bonus tracks) is pressed on 180-gram high quality vinyl, is packaged in sturdy gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves featuring song lyrics and includes a 320kbps digital download of the entire album!
