Black Swan Records was a   founded in 1921 in , . It was the first widely distributed label to be owned and operated by, and marketed to, . (Broome Special Phonograph Records was the first to be owned and operated by African Americans). The label name was revived in the 1990s for reissues of historic jazz and blues recordings.

The following is taken from Wikipedia: Origins[]

Black Swan's parent company, Pace Phonograph Corporation, was founded in March  by  and was based in . The new production company was formed after Pace's music publishing partnership with , Pace & Handy, had dissolved. (Some historians have thought W.C. Handy had a stake in Pace's new business, but Handy's own words contradict this: " ...He [Harry Pace] simply chose this time to sever connection with our firm in order that he might organized Pace Phonograph Company, issuing Black Swan Records and making a serious bid for the Negro market. ... With Pace went a large number of our employees. ... Still more confusion and anguish grew out of the fact that people did not generally know that I had no stake in the Black Swan Record Company.")

Popular entertainer and pioneering black recording artist  was an early investor in Pace Phonograph. Williams also promised to record for the company once his exclusive contract with  ended, but he died before that could occur.

Pace Phonograph Corporation was renamed Black Swan Phonograph Company in the fall of 1922. Both the record label and production company were named after 19th century opera star , who was known as the Black Swan.

Noted author, activist, and academic  was a stockholder and member of the Board of Directors of Black Swan. Ads for Black Swan often ran in , the magazine of the , which Du Bois edited.

Notable employees[]

Former employees of Pace & Handy staffed the new company: , the recording manager, provided  accompaniment for singers and led a small band for recording sessions.  was named arranger and later musical director.

THIS AND THE OTHER BLACK SWAN DISCS

LISTED ON THIS SITE WERE ALL FOUND IN A MASS. HOME

NEAR MINT or NM / M- : record appears virtually flawless. A very minor scuff and very little else can appear on the vinyl. It should play without any noise over the flaw. The flaw is very hard to see. COVER: The cover looks as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and or age.

EXCELLENT or EX or VG++ : record shows minor scuffs which are only slightly visible. There may be more than a few scuffs and NO Scratches. COVER: Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be.

VERY GOOD PLUS or VG+ : record shows wear, surface scuffs. The vinyl still has a great luster, but the flaws will be noticeable to the naked eye.  COVERS: A virtually clean cover, but may have small writing on it.The artwork looks clean with slightly more aging / yellowing.

VERY GOOD or VG :  record is a record that is good enough. They are not really going to look very good,. There will almost always be some surface noise when they are played. The sonic dynamics should still be excellent, overpowering the surface noise. A VG record will appear well played but still have some luster. COVER: covers will look worn, used. There may be some seam splitting . There will be some ring wear, where the ink has begun to wear off. Giving the cover a look of snow falling.

GOOD or G : record will look very well played, dull, grayish and possibly abused. However a Good record should still play. It will have distracting surface noise. Such as crackle that is continuous or some hiss. Will also have some loss of dynamics caused from grooves being worn. COVER: cover will have just about everything wrong with it. It will have seam splits (possibly taped repaired, but only with scotch tape).

CONDITION: RECORD: GOOD PLUS TO VERY GOOD MINUS
