“LES CONCERTS EN CHINE”
(THE CHINA CONCERTS)
DISQUE DREYFUS FDM 18110
12” 33rpm FRENCH PRESSING
DOUBLE ALBUM ©1982
Thanks for viewing my sale for a factory sealed, pristine new old stock (NOS) copy of Jean Michel Jarre’s “Les Concerts en Chine” double album released on Disques Dreyfus. This is a wonderful, high quality French pressing as fresh as when it was first released.
The Concerts in China (title: Les Concerts en Chine) is a live album recorded in 1981 and released in 1982. It was recorded during Jarre's Chine tour of Autumn 1981, which consisted of five Beijing and Shanghai concerts in; this was the first time a Western pop artist performed in China after the Cultural Revolution.
The album is a balance of previously released tracks by Jarre, new compositions inspired by Chinese culture, and one rearranged traditional Chinese track ("Fishing Junks at Sunset"). The album consists mainly of live material, plus ambient sound recordings and one new studio track "Souvenir of China". Other new compositions recorded live include "Night in Shanghai", "Laser Harp", "Arpegiator" and "Orient Express". "Fishing Junks at Sunset" is a new arrangement of a very old traditional Chinese song known as the "Fisherman's Chant at Dusk", which was performed and recorded with The Peking Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra and is often wrongly attributed as being composed by Jean Michel Jarre, misled by the album inlay.
The album was originally released as a double-disc , then as a double-disc . There was also a CD release in two separate volumes, with the cover color changed to blue (Vol. 1) and yellow (Vol. 2).
One of the album's original tracks – "Arpegiator" – was used in the soundtrack of the cult film "9½ Weeks" as well as in several mid-1980s episodes of the American soap opera Santa Barbara
.
The Concerts in China's opening track "The Overture" is in fact the first movement of "Magnetic Fields Part 1" slowed down.
The album reached #6 in the UK charts and #1 in Portugal.
It may be of interest that as of 2004 Jean Michel Jarre has sold an estimated 80 million albums and held the first concert that attracted more than a million people to a single performance, and since has exceeded that number to several of his blockbuster music and light shows.
As precusor to Electronica, Jarre pioneered Ambient and the New Age genres. I believe Trance and maybe even EDM were influenced by this virtuoso electronic musician. If you are not familiar with Jarre, it is worth the time to explore his Youtube videos.
Originally Jarre played guitar in a band, but his musical style was perhaps most heavily influenced by Pierre Schaeffer, a pioneer of music concrète at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. His first mainstream success was the 1976 album Oxygène.

All our vinyl LPs and 45s listed on eBay are from a 50 year personal collection of record albums and singles we starting accumulating back in the mid-1960s, dedicated to preserving original pressings in the best over-all condition possible. Our New Old Stock (NOS) inventory, mostly consisting of import pressings, come from our long closed record shops: Discount Record Shop and Choice Recordings of Washington, DC and Half-Thoughts Records of Manasquan, NJ. Our beloved record collection is a mix of Rock, Roots Music, 60’s Garage, Psychedelic, Soul, R&B, Blues, Punk, New Wave, Metal, Girl Groups, Picture Discs, Classical, Choral, Opera, Jazz, International/World Beat, Movie Soundtracks, Musicals, Spoken Word, and Audiophile pressings in all genres. We are offering a number of rock and soul singles. Back in the day we would compare sound quality between multiple editions of the same titles to keep the best sounding copies for ourselves. All records were played on high-end turntables with reasonably fresh stylus and carefully monitored tracking force & azimuth.
Please read through description and condition sections of this advertisement carefully to be sure you want the item prior to ordering.
RECORD GRADING: At this time we are only selling NM to VG+ and many NOS (new old stock).
New Old Stock (NOS): Preserved in my time vault. If the record is sealed or never been opened, it is considered Mint. If the cover does not appear as new, then we will rate it per below.
Mint (M): The record or cover must appear as new.
Near Mint (NM): This generally means the vinyl is in pristine condition with only one or two slight marks that will not affect playback. A NM cover will may show slight signs of wear or one or two marks but still looks fresh and crisp.
Near Mint Minus (NM-): This slightly below the NM grade with more slight imperfection or slight cover wear, perhaps an out of square or bent corner, but generally close to flawless.
Very Good Plus Plus (VG++) Record may have sleeve marks from being pulled in and out of a cover. Typically these marks will only be viewable under a bright light bulb. Generally will play through like a NM or NM- with little to no surface noise. Cover may have storage wear, tiny age spots, toning or creasing - nothing distracting or major.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
Cut-Outs: Also known as Over Stocks are always noted since they are generally marked with a slightly cut corner or a notch in the cover placed near a corner. We never list a cut or notched corner higher than NM- due to the overstock marking process.
45 Cut-Outs: Generally have a hole drilled through the label and we only purchased these type of cutouts when the record was too tempting to pass-up. Again, we identify singles that were drilled.
PAYMENT: eBay requires payment via PayPal, so please pay at time of purchase and, in return, we will make every effort to rush your shipment to you.
PACKAGING: Our records are professionally packed in thick, sturdy cardboard record mailers or envelopes & clearly labeled FRAGILE & DO NOT BEND. To date, we have not experienced damage in transit.
SHIPPING: For 12” albums, we give the choice of USPS Media Mail or Priority Insured; Post Office loss or damage at your risk if you do not select the Priority option, which also reduces transit time by ⅓ and less exposure to damage. For certain high-priced records, we simply do not offer the option of Media Mail for obvious reasons.
RETURNS: Generally we our very cautious when accepting returns (shipping at your cost) and, at this time, will only replace a defective item with the same recording.
FEEDBACK: We leave feedback for every sale and hope you will do the same for us. For confident purchasing, please take a look at our feedback, we make every effort to provide accurate descriptions of condition and large, detailed photos.
QUESTIONS: We are happy to answer any queation you may have BEFORE placeing a bid or making a purchase!
All vinyl records are properly stored and well kept. Over time, some covers tone (i.e., get slightly yellow or brown along the edges),which we will try to describe in our description.
Our items reside in a PET-FREE / SMOKE-FREE storage environment.
