Low is the studio album by David Bowie, co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti. Widely regarded as one of Bowie's most influential releases, Low was the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno termed the "Berlin Trilogy". The album marked a decisive shift in his musical style toward an electronic and avant-garde approach that would be further explored on the subsequent albums "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979).

The genesis of Low lies in both the foundations laid by Bowie's previous album Station to Station, and music he intended for the soundtrack to The Man Who Fell to Earth. When Bowie presented his material for the film to Nicolas Roeg, the director decided that it would not be suitable. Roeg preferred a more folksy sound, although John Phillips (the chosen composer for the soundtrack) described Bowie's contributions as "haunting and beautiful". Elements from these pieces were incorporated into Low instead. The album's cover, like Station to Station, is a still from the movie: the photographic image, under the album's title, formed a deliberate pun on the phrase "low profile". The album's working title was New Music Night and Day.


By contrast, Billboard called the album's second side "the most adventurous and a stark contrast to the few distorted hard rock cuts on side one" and wrote that Low "emphasizes Bowie's serious writing efforts which only time can tell will appeal to the people who have watched him go through various musical phases"
Low appears on a number of critics' "best album" lists. Pitchfork Media placed it at number 1 on the website's "Top 100 Albums of the 1970s".In 2000 Q placed it at number 14 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. In 2003, the album was ranked number 249 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.[30] In a retrospective review, The Rolling Stone Album Guide states "it's the music of an overstimulated mind in an exhausted body [...] sashays through some serious emotional wreckage".Philip Glass based his 1992 classical composition Low Symphony on Low, with Bowie and Eno both influencing the work.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

It is unbelievably hard to find copies of LOW with great audio. So many vinyls, even visually clean examples can play with a  lot of noise, distortion and repetitive clicks. For such a varied album that is not surprising, but the production and mastering also meant that these vinyls were prone to dust penetration and surface noise, and there are a lot of quiet areas that can just sound terrible on worn copies. 

To give an example of how unusual this pressing is, there is a faint vocal echo on Bowie's voice on the quiet 'Sound and Vision' track. Not the echo on the primary vocal, but a very faint second vocal. This can usually never be heard, it is so faint and the slightest vinyl wear will cover it up. On this amazing press the vocal definition is crystal clear.

This is a great AUDIO press example, with incredible strong, undistorted sound, and a minimum of detectable static or surface sound. The channels are clean and unstressed. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power. All the instruments and every breath of Bowie's singing is bright and clear. As with the bass and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and precise. I will give a detailed account below.

Even for David Bowie LOW is a complex and varied collection of music and is extremely hard to find in clear audio condition. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like 'Warszawa.' This pressing has unbelievable strong undistorted audio, with super clear strong sound. NO  interference, and NO loud pops or clicks or distortion. Any static is extremely low level, barely detectable, (if at all) and that is unusual for any vinyl. It really sounds great and plays with great sound separation and clarity!

The album starts with amazing power and clarity. 'Speed of Life' is a complex track with extremely complex audio layering, all crystal clear. A wonderful 'Breaking Glass' really sounds like it has never been played, its so clear. It sounds like the vinyl looks as a matter of fact. NO light static at the start of the track or anywhere else. 'What in the World' plays beautifully, with that echo on Bowie's voice in the chorus, nearly always lost, sounds superb. 'Sound and Vision' plays superbly with no static or surface sound at all. Unbelievable. Same with 'Always Crashing the Same Car' and 'Be My Wife', the audio is flawless. Rounding off side 1. 'A New Career in A New Town' sounds amazing, simply perfect, flawless audio.

'Warszawa' brings in side 2. again with incredibly clear audio, as with 'Art Decade', which plays with great clear sound, and just a  touch of very occasional distant surface static and two static tics only. And I mean you have to have your head with next to the speaker and be straining to hear any static at all. 'Weeping Wall' plays again with what can only be described as perfect audio, and I don't use that term lightly. 'Subterranean' finishes off this great album with the same top standard. Simply wonderful clear audio !

I really enjoyed every second of this rare 1st pressing. There are NO repeat tics, NO distortion, NO sticks or jumps what so ever. This pressing plays with crisp clear audio throughout, with no loss of audio performance what so ever. Truly unbelievable audio experience. 

I would easily give this a grading of NEAR MINT condition. 

THE LABELS

Famous RCA labels are in SUPERB Condition, no marks or writing, no  spindle wear.  A lovely set of labels with NO spindle traces or marks of any sort. These are an immaculate pair of labels! As close to perfect as labels can ever be.

THE RECORD - Visual Grading 

A superb piece of glossy vinyl, and a really thick pressing. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl is as new. On first inspection in strong daylight this vinyl looks completely unmarked.  When inspected under a powerful spot light, it still looks largely unmarked, with just some faint of sleeve removal marks.

THE COVER 

The unlaminated pale covers of LOW are almost impossible to find in great condition. They are nearly always scuffed and creased to a large extent, if not heavily worn, with dark specs where the colour has been worn off across the flat surfaces. I don't need to tell you how rare it is to have a pressing that is has a solid square spine and un worn edges. 

This great complete 1st press comes with the original unlaminated cover, which is a stunning example. The cover shows barely any handling wear, minimal creasing and corner wear, and has certainly no tears or obvious defects. There is no feathering to the openings, which is very unusual. The cover is square and un flattened and has been has not lost any of its shape. 

I would grade this at EXCELLENT.

THE INNER

Great Original 1st Press inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. A great example, with a few light creases and some light discolouration only, there are no tears to the top edges, and NO seem splits. This is a great fully intact example with minimal wear.
