Mint (M):             Absolutely perfect in every way. Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed. *This grade should be used sparingly, if at all.*   Near Mint (NM or M-):             This should be a nearly perfect record. The record should show no signs of wear. It should basically look like you just bought it and took it out of the shrink wrap.
Excellent (EX):     The record has been played, but the sound is still very great . There should not be many noticeable surface marks or scratches, and the cover may have slight creasing or wear.    Very Good Plus (VG+):             These will show some signs that it has been played but otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. It may have very light scratches that don’t affect the sound. Some imperfections to the cover/sleeves are acceptable.   Very Good (VG):             Surface noise will be evident upon playing but will not overpower the music. Slight scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that may affect the sound will be noticeable. Cover may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers attached. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, it should have only two or three of them.   Good or Good Plus (G or G+):             A record in this condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise, scratches, and visible groove wear. The cover or sleeve will have seam splits especially along the bottom or spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, and other defects will be present on cover or sleeves.   Poor or Fair (P or F):             The record is cracked, badly warped, and won’t play through without skipping or repeating. Cover and sleeves are torn, water damaged, falling apart. Other than VERY RARE records these should not be purchased for more than a few cents each.
