J.S. Bach: Sonatas for Violin & Harpsichord (S.1014-1019) / Susanne Lautenbacher (v.) and Martin Galling (h.) / VOX, SVUX 52027, Stereo, 2 LPs, U.S., First Pressing (?)
A VG+/Ex set in what I believe to be its first pressing. Box, booklet, 2 LPs in plain paper-poly sleeves. Deadwax readings: S-811-1 RVG; S-812 RVG; S-813 RVG; S-814-1 ARC8-10-66. The alphanumerics are etched, Rudy Van Gelder's initials are stamped. The sequence uniquely attached to the fourth side is smaller and fainter and may well read "ARCH" rather than "ARC8". The "10-66" is presumed to be the date of the first pressing. The box is Ex: one faint mark above the Bach "B" (it looks to be an errant pencil swipe - see the image), no splits, very clean, strong and legible label edge, solid corners and edges with one very small nick to the rear edge. The front portrait is slightly off center, but this seems to be a production error, not an effect of subsequent mishandling. The booklet is clean and solid but very faintly creased by previous handling. The grooved purple and silver labels are very clean with a swipe or two evident around the hole when closely inspected. A touch of white beneath the label's purple base is evident at the holes of the odd-numbered sides. The sides are VG+: flat, glossy, generally clean; a few finger impressions, some paper scuff and a handful of hairlines as well as one small scratch on side 4. The records have been playgraded more than visually vouched for: sides 1, 2, and 4 have short-lived ticks at their openings but are very clean and quiet otherwise, save for another short-lived tick on 4 (at the spot of the scratch) during the penultimate movement. Also caught two very quiet "pops" on side 3. All this is attested to on the samples that follow, but hope that this doesn't give the impression that the records are overly noisy for, again, they are mainly very clean and enjoyable.
