IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH! AND YOU COULD BE ONLY THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS EARLY PRESSING FAMOUS ALBUM FROM A PRIVATE SELLER!!

This auction is for an early STEREO pressing of The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’, catalogue no. PCS 7027, owned and played only by me since I bought it in 1967. It comes in the famous Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. gatefold flipback sleeve with the 'p.1967 Long Play 33 1/3 rpm PCS 7027 Stereo'  info printed top right on the back cover.

It contains the original cut-outs in pristine condition.

The yellow and black label has the wording ‘The Gramophone Co. Ltd.’  and ‘All rights of the manufacturer………’ around the edge. ‘P 1967’ beneath (YEX.637). The wording “Sold in the UK Subject to resale price conditions…..” can be found under the Parlophone lettering.  There is no Tax Code embossed on the label

The Matrix is YEX 637 - 1 on side 1, and  YEX 638 - 1 on side 2. It is stamped G R R at 3’clock on side 1; and stamped G A L at 3 o’clock on side 2. It is stamped 2 at 9 o'clock (the 'Mother' stamp) on side 1.

As to the record itself – I played it for this listing for the first time in many years and can honestly say that every track plays without a single scratch or static pop and crackle. With very close inspection there are no visible hairline marks on the playing surfaces which overall have a shiny sheen to them with no fingerprints.  The labels have very light spindle marks in a certain light, and no spindle wear around the centre hole.

The sleeve shows FEW signs of its 50 years, despite having undergone a few house moves and temporary (dry) storage. There is a little softening to the corners but the front cover laminate is intact and the spine is firm with title printing intact. The inner flipbacks are securely glued still. The printing of the lyrics on the back of the cover is clear and un-marked.  Despite having always been stored upright there is no wear to the lower edge.  Hopefully the condition of both the record and sleeve can be seen from the photos.

The title to track two is printed "A little help from my friends", missing out the "With"  - an early printing error.

It has the graduated sleeve from the original mono version of the album.  I kept the inner when I (stupidly) sold the mono to a mate when I bought a stereo record player. This sleeve has a couple of tears and is completely split along the bottom edge but nevertheless is a collector's item in its own right as it was only issued with the first pressings.

I have owned this record from new!  It has never been lent out nor taken to parties – I was always selfish like that. It has always been handled by the edges and never stacked on an auto-changer.

In conclusion, if you want to be only the second owner of this pristine piece of vinyl and not buy from a shop or dealer then you can bid with confidence.  I am now reluctantly selling all of my collection of vintage vinyl from the 60s due to space limitations. Keep an eye out for further Beatles releases and John Barry Soundtracks, many of which are first pressings.
