PEACE SELLS...BUT WHO'S BUYING?
A bona-fide thrash metal masterpiece, 1986's Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? was Megadeth's second album and the band's first Capitol/EMI release. The acclaimed album thrust Megadeth into the international spotlight once and for all and remains a powerful thrash metal staple. Anchored by the anthemic title track and second single "Wake My Dead," Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? was certified Platinum in 1992.
SO FAR, SO GOOD...SO WHAT!
On Megadeth's third LP, 1988's So Far, So Good, So What!, the band continued to prove that in the right hands, sheer density and force of riffs can work as hooks unto themselves. With this album, Megadeth took it to another level and proved once again that they were a force to be reckoned with in the world of metal. What you will hear is some of the most killer, heaviest, assaulting thrash metal ever unleashed. So Far, So Good, So What! climbed to #28 on U.S. Billboard charts and was certified Platinum in 1998.
RUST IN PEACE
1990's Rust In Peace, Megadeth's fourth full-length, is held in high regard in the metal community as one of the best thrash/speed metal albums of all time; debuting at #23 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and #8 in the U.K. The album showcased a much tighter sound, with MegaDave's writing style adopting a rhythmically complex progressive edge. The musicianship is tight, the lyrics are personal, and it all adds up to form one of the finest fusions of intensity and technicality found on record. Rust In Peace earned Megadeth their first Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1990, the first of six consecutive nominations in that category.
COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION
Megadeth’s fifth studio album, Countdown to Extinction, is considered by many to be the band’s best and most accessible album. None of their previous records were as polemical as the sonic missiles launched by Countdown. Mustaine laced the songs with acid-tongued commentary about subjects ranging from the futility of war (“Architecture of Aggression”) to the senseless brutality of caged hunting (“Countdown to Extinction”). “Foreclosure of a Dream” sampled George Bush’s infamous “Read my lips” speech, making a statement about taxation endangering the American Dream. Thanks to a perfect balance of hard-rock song structures, epic choruses, and fleet-fingered guitar work, Countdown to Extinction became an instant classic, benefiting from copious MTV and radio play.
YOUTHANASIA
1994's Youthanasia marked the continuing evolution of Megadeth. Following in the footsteps of what Mustaine and company's previous album, Countdown To Extinction started in 1992, Youthanasia displays a tighter, more melodic sound than the band's preceding efforts. The songs are all top-notch, the production is crisp, and the sound is crystal-clear. All in all this album is an integral part of Megadeth's revered catalogue. Anchored by the signature Megadeth cut "Train Of Consequences," the album reached #4 on U.S. Billboard charts and was certified Platinum in 1995.
