Grading records is a tricky business depending on a person’s taste, perception of sound and sound system used but here are some guidelines:

MINT (M)  : Brand new , still sealed. (As the record has never been played there still may be some manufacturing flaws nobody can foresee)

NEAR MINT (NM or M-) : A record hardly ever played or only test played a couple of times. Sounds great with no audible disturbing noise. Cover looks very fresh and clean.

EXCELLENT (EX) : The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging may have slight wear or creasing.

VG+ : a record at the better end of VERY GOOD (VG) below

VERY GOOD (VG) : The record has clearly been played many times, but shows no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Some age-related background sound may occur. Normal wear and tear on the cover which is acceptable for the age of the record.

GOOD (or FAIR) (G or F): The record has been played much and the sound quality has been affected, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, may be discoloured or with some stains.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise and may jump. The cover will be badly damaged or partly missing.
