THIN LIZZY
When scrolling down a list of debut LPs by rock’s heaviest hitters, 1971's Thin Lizzy is too often lost in the shuffle. Long before the group’s trademark “twin-guitar” sound was born and anthems like "Jailbreak" and “The Boys Are Back In Town” became instant hall-of-fame material, the street tough group was a dynamic power trio consisting of guitarist Eric Bell, singing bass player Philip Lynott, and drummer Brian Downey. Forming only a year before their signing to Decca Records, Thin Lizzy fused folk, hard rock, lyrical poetry, and a dose of Celtic lore in one heady and potent brew here.
SHADES OF A BLUE ORPHANAGE
1972's Shades Of A Blue Orphanage is Thin Lizzy's second full-length recording named in homage to the members' former groups (Eric Bell's Shades of Blue and Lynott and Brian Downey's Orphanage). The soft, sensitive “Sarah" was written for Phil Lynott’s grandmother who raised him in lieu of his absent mother. “I Don’t Want To Forget How To Jive” sees the band try their hand at rockabilly, and “Chatting Today” evokes the emotive performances of Richie Havens. As a whole, Shades Of A Blue Orphanage presents a version of the band that places its foundations beyond the hard rock for which the group are famous.
VAGABONDS OF THE WESTERN WORLD
The third studio album from Thin Lizzy was released in 1973 and was the last album with guitarist Eric Bell. Between Jim Fitzpatrick’s lurid album cover which depicted the band in space, the new, hot-rod-like Thin Lizzy logo, and Lynott’s newly throaty howl, Vagabonds is possibly the first Thin Lizzy album on which they truly could be described as a hard rock band. Vagabonds presented a swaggering confidence, a band buoyed by the success of semi-accidental smash hit “Whisky In The Jar,” and carved out a moody, dark sound by borrowing bits from the blues, folk, psych, and Celtic music. Their big hits and glory years - beginning with 1976’s Jailbreak - were still ahead of them, but, with Vagabonds as a centerpiece, Thin Lizzy’s early years left behind a cabinet of curiosities.
NIGHTLIFE
Thin Lizzy’s fourth studio album, this 1974 release, produced by Ron Nevinson and Phil Lynott, was the first album to feature guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Allmusic described Nightlife as an "underrated gem of a record," but a "complete anomaly within their catalog"... "a subdued, soulful record, smooth in ways that Thin Lizzy never were before and rarely were afterwards." The review singles out "She Knows" as "gently propulsive, [and] utterly addictive", but adds that there are "still moments of tough, primal rock 'n' roll", such as "It's Only Money" and "Sha La La."
FIGHTING
If there's an album where the Thin Lizzy as we know them was born - or, perhaps more accurately reborn - then it must surely be 1975's Fighting. It was the band's fifth album in all, and the second with the line-up of Lynott (bass/vocals), Brian Robertson and Scotty Gorham (guitar) and Brian Downey (drums). Previous album, Nightlife served as the stepping stone to Fighting, where the group finally arrived at a style and approach which suited them, and gave Thin Lizzy a sense of focus and purpose for the future.
JAILBREAK
Originally issued in 1976, Jailbreak is Thin Lizzy's sixth studio album and commercial breakthrough in the U.S. thanks to the omnipresent hit singles "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are Back in Town." Arguably the band's finest overall, Jailbreak is simultaneously tough and touching, barbarous and balletic. This all-time classic belongs in every rock collection, period! Thin Lizzy's tough, twin-guitar sound and Lynott's songs were in a zone here that's rarely been matched on record.
JOHNNY THE FOX
Johnny The Fox is Thin Lizzy's seventh studio album and second of 1976 following commercial breakthrough Jailbreak. The album was written and recorded while bassist/vocalist Lynott was recovering from a bout of hepatitis that took him off the road halfway through the Jailbreak tour and as a rock album, it stands with the best of Thin Lizzy's output. Released during the band's peak years of the mid-to-late '70s, Johnny the Fox highlights the twin guitar attack of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson and Lynott's burgeoning songwriting skills - revealing much more focused material while the overall tone is looser than previous offerings. Includes the all-time Thin Lizzy classic "Don't Believe a Word."
BAD REPUTATION
Originally issued in 1977, Bad Reputation is Thin Lizzy's eighth studio album and it finds the group teaming up with legendary producer Tony Visconti who gives the band a much leaner and tougher sound than earlier efforts. Rivaling Jailbreak as Thin Lizzy's best studio effort, the album climbed to No. 4 in the U.K. and is home to the hit single, "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight)."
BLACK ROSE - A ROCK LEGEND
Recorded in 1979 as a follow-up to their mega successful Live And Dangerous, Phil Lynott, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and new guitar sensation Gary Moore forged ahead once again with their trademark hard rock sound and continued their assault on audiences worldwide with Black Rose - A Rock Legend. Featuring classics like “Do Anything You Want To,” “My Sarah,” and “Waiting For An Alibi,” this masterpiece has truly stood the test of time. This Friday Music reissue has been mastered impeccably from the original Warner Music tapes and includes a first time gatefold cover which features the original album cover art as well as the original photos and artwork included in the album inner sleeve not seen in years.
