A unique holy grail.

The Scary Monsters album was recorded in New York (The Power Station) and London (Good Earth Studios), acetates were cut in London at The TOWN HOUSE.

Acetates are not like pressed vinyl records. They are made of an aluminium plate coated with a cellulose-based lacquer and processed directly from the master tape using a cutting lathe. They are expensive and fragile, and cutting requires time and expertise.

Three types of acetates exist:

- Studio/Playback acetates as this one, usually cut during the recording sessions to evaluate the song or for the manager to look for a record label or transfer as demo samples to exisitng record company for evaluation/feedback. These often contain alternate versions and usually only a handfull are cut;

- Mastering/Reference acetates, usually cut at the record company for internal evaluation purposes. These sometimes contain alternate mixes; and

- Production acetates, these are cut to produce the stampers/matrices, thus contain finished songs as released and most are destroed during the process.

This 38 years old lacquer comes from a major collection.
