Pogue Mahone

Dark Streets Of London b/w The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

Pogue Mahone; PM1, 1984

This is one of three scarce Stiff label singles that I am selling on eBay at the moment. Click on See Other Items Above if you would like to view the others.

Pogue Mahone was of course the original name of the Pogues although this is the only single the band ever released under that name. I’m  slightly unclear about the exact sequence of events. This record was first released in 1984 in the form you see here, on Pogue Mahone Records, the band’s own label. The release coincided with Pogue Mahone signing with Stiff Records (their first record deal) and also with complaints from Gaelic-speakers who had seen the band on TV, that the band’s name was offensive (“pogue mahone” means “kiss my arse” in Gaelic apparently). The band, in conjunction with Stiff, agreed on a change of name to “the Pogues”, and the record was reissued on the Stiff label as BUY 207 under that name. Both releases used the same label designs – apart from the necessary change of catalogue numbers and so on.

Neither the original release nor the Stiff release made any impact on the UK charts so both versions are now rare. The Stiff release was the better seller partly because the Stiff single had the weight of Stiff’s promotional expertise behind it and partly because the Pogues were becoming better known anyway – they had toured with the Clash and had made a couple of TV appearances.

I’ve owned this copy of Dark Streets Of London b/w The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (it’s a double A-side) from new. It is an excellent copy. The playing surface is in very nice condition with just a few faint lines. It plays perfectly. The labels are bright and clean too. It comes in a new white sleeve.

Don’t forget to view the other two Stiff rarities that I have listed at the moment!

If however, winning buyers would prefer cheaper options, I am always happy to help with that if I can. Please contact me for a quote.

I hope this description has given you enough to go on but should you require any further information, or more images, please do e-mail.  Please also look carefully at the hi-res photos – they are part of the description.  Thanks for your interest in this auction and good luck if you decide to bid.

Please note:  I will not respond to requests to close the auction early regardless of the value of the offer made.  Ending early is contrary to both the principle and spirit of an auction. It is also unfair to other eBayers who may be watching the auction intending to bid at a later time.
