Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release. Gone West is a new Nashville-based group featuring 2-time Grammy award winner Colbie Caillat, multi-platinum singer/songwriter Jason Reeves, 4-time Hawaii music award winner Justin Kawika Young and ACM and CMT nominated artist Nelly Joy.

Gone West are one of those rare bands who have written a song after their own name, a move that explains a lot about this band consisting of two sets of happy couples. The core collaborators here are Colbie Caillat and Jason Reeves, who have worked together since Caillat's 2007 debut Coco. While they've each brought their significant other to the table, the addition of Justin Young and Nelly Joy doesn't greatly alter the feel of the music, nor does the decision to pitch Gone West as a country band. Young and Joy add harmony, the country designation comes with additional acoustic guitars, and there are many songs about home and heartbreak, yet the quartet's 2020 debut LP Canyons still feels like a Colbie Caillat project. It’s the kind of music where the breakup song "Confetti" is delivered with a big grin, the kind of album where the melancholy notes are not only fleeting, they're comforting. In other words, Canyons doesn't significantly depart from the blueprint Gone West developed on their eponymous 2019 debut EP, the contents of which are included in its entirety (the subsequent digital singles "What Could've Been" and "Slow Down" are also here, meaning about half of Canyons has been previously released). The new material tends to slightly emphasize the lead and harmony vocals of the rest of Gone West, but it's not quite enough to change how Canyons is a nice, cozy update of the SoCal soft rock aesthetic, and a warm hug of an album.
