LABEL PRESS DETAILS:

ULTRA RARE  Mono TRACK labels labels with MADE IN Gt BRITAIN text. First released December 1967.

This is a rare and COMPLETE 1st UK pressing of the great SELL OUT. Finding a 1st Mono press in this wonderful condition is very rare indeed and makes this a very special chance to own a genuinely rare early press with brilliant clear sound.

Mono 1st pressings of SELL OUT are not only rare, but were recorded with a gritty, earthy sound that meant that the quality of the original press audio often wasn't that clear. Even perfect vinyl specimens could sound blurred.

Finding a clear sounding pressing in great condition is near impossible, and this 1st Mono press is a truly outstanding example with crystal clear sound.

A great complete MONO 1st pressing of this iconic 20th century album!

The Who Sell Out is the third album by The Who, released in 1967 by Track Records in the UK and Decca Records in the US. It is a concept album, formatted as a collection of unrelated songs interspersed with faux commercials and public service announcements. The album purports to be a broadcast by pirate radio station Radio London. "I Can See for Miles" was released as a single and peaked at #10 in the UK and #9 in the US.

The album's release was reportedly followed by lawsuits due to the mention of real-world commercial interests in the faux commercials and on the album covers, and by the makers of the real jingles (Radio London jingles), who claimed the Who used them without permission. (The jingles were produced by PAMS Productions of Dallas, Texas, which created thousands of station ID jingles in the 1960s and '70s). It was the deodorant company Odorono, who took offence that Chris Stamp made a request for endorsement dollars.

Original vinyl copies of Sell Out end with an audio oddity that repeats into a locked groove (In response to the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band). The music in the locked groove is an instrumental version of what was originally intended to be a vocal jingle for the Who's UK label Track Records.
Music critic Richie Unterberger called the album's music "jubilant" psychedelic pop and felt that it exhibits a balance between "melodic mod pop and powerful instrumentation". Edna Gundersen of USA Today observed power pop on the album. SELL OUT is now considered an early Who masterpiece and a pivotal concept album of its era.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO

SELL OUT is a very early masterpiece by The Who and is also a notoriously  sensitive piece of vinyl. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on musically complex and busy tracks like ‘Armenia City In The Skies’. I am a huge fan of this album, and also a highly critical of the audio performance. I just can't stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound, and it is so hard to find any 1st Mono pressing with a great audio performance.

I am pleased to say that this rare pressing plays through with great, un disturbed audio. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks, the channels are clean and unstressed. It looks and sounds unplayed. There is barely any light occasional static, (as found on all vinyls)  the audio is brilliant strong and clear, its is a stunning listen. I will give a detailed account below:

This great 1st press starts with surprisingly little static in run ins and intro to 'Armenia City In The Skies', a track that can be plagued by crackle, hiss and static. Just great clear sound, the track plays superbly with out a single loud click or pop. The audio is superb. Barely any occasional light static and no light (barely audible) static pops.

'Heinz Baked Beans' and 'Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands' sound very clear and the whole of the first side really plays with superbly clear audio throughout. Any surface sound is extremely quiet and infrequent. There are no repeating tics during these tracks, no faint background pops or clicks. The sound is crystal clear and there are no loud pops or clicks, and certainly not even a hint of distortion anywhere. I can confirm this whole album plays without a hint of distortion what so ever, and thats incredibly rare for any original Mono 1st pressing of Sell Out.

'Odorono' and 'Tattoo' sounds superb, with crystal clear audio, and the raw audio effects that Pete Townsend worked so hard at achieving live can really be heard here. No loud pops or clicks, just incredibly bright sound.

'Our Love was, is' comes in again with incredibly clear bright sound, I could hear some light static only, and no distortion and a single pop in  the middle only. Leading to the final track of side 1. the classic 'I Can See for Miles'. Great clear sound. Some very faint, barely audible occasional static only. Superb.

'I Can't Reach You' kicks in side 2. with amazing clear audio.  Any background static I have to strongly state is very far in the background, and in no way interferes with any of the music. There are no light pops at the start of the track, or anywhere else.

'Spotted Henry' also plays superbly, still with no loud pops or clicks, and absolutely minimal (if any) static.

I'm very happy to say that the same goes for the intro to 'Relax'. So often heavily distorted and affected by clicks and hiss, it plays through with amazing clarity and superb bright sound.  Virtually no audible static at all, no pops, clicks or even any tics. The long outro plays with just crystal clear audio. There are two light pops between tracks, but none during music.

Even the rockous blues of 'Silas Stingy', such a difficult track to find with clear sound, pays superbly. An amazing audio performance without a single click and just one pop in the middle. There is barely any static during that quiet intro, and any that is there is very light by any standards.

'Sunrise' and 'Rael' rounds off the album again with simply incredibly clear sound. Not a single pop or click and amazing clear audio, this really stunning performance.

This 1st MONO press record plays with staggering power, great audio nothing obtrusive to distract from the over all enjoyment of this great record. Minimal (if any) surface or static noise between the tracks, even in the long quiet sections it is clean, crisp and rich.

The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power and clarity. As is the same with the keyboard layering and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. On the whole this lp plays with superb, clear bright rich audio.

The sound quality is consistent and extremely high, I would easily give an overall audio grading at NEAR MINT.

THE RECORD – Visual Grading

A stunning piece of glossy vinyl, this rare 1st press is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves. In daylight it looks largely unmarked. A couple of faint whispy paper handling marks, a very light small scuff and one ultra faint short sleeve removal hairline only, and need to be seen under an intense spotlight, it cant be seen in normal light. A really stunning example that has only been played a couple of times.

Graded at NEAR MINT to MINT.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

THE LABELS

A lovely set of labels. Just a couple of extremely light spindle trace on each side. Absolutely no marks or writing what so ever, and NO brush marks that these labels seem prone to, and no spindle wear. Great all round examples!

Graded at NEAR MINT.

THE COVER

The cover is divided into panels featuring a photograph by David Montgomery of each of the band members, two on the front and two on the back. On the front is Pete Townshend applying Odorono brand deodorant from an oversized stick, and Roger Daltrey sitting in a bathtub full of Heinz baked beans (holding an oversized tin can of the same). Daltrey claims to have caught pneumonia after sitting for a prolonged period in the bathtub, as the beans had been frozen.
On the back is Keith Moon applying Medac from an oversized tube, and John Entwistlein a leopard-skin Tarzan suit, squeezing a blonde woman in a leopard-skin bikini with one arm and a teddy bear with the other, an ad for the Charles Atlas course mentioned in one of the album's faux commercials.

The MONO covers of  SELL OUT are extremely prone to wear. These covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges and serious laminate cracks and creasing. The Spines are nearly always flattened, worn and scuffed.

This Ultra Rare 1st ever press cover is in great condition, with minimal scuffing to the corners, and virtually no rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for this album. The opening edges are very square and un frayed, again unheard of.  There are a few creases and indentations, and a couple of very small patches of light laminate lifts near the spine, but these are very unobtrusive. All round, this is a really nice example, with some very minor handling wear.

This ORIGINAL 1st Pressing cover is graded at EXCELLENT.

THE POSTER

A small number of first pressings of Sell Out came with a large, psychedelic, six panel poster, and these posters or incredibly rare. The original pressings came with a flat matt lithograph style poster, as found with this great first pressing

This Original Poster is in MINT condition. No tears, stains, creasing and NO seem splits at all.

These posters are completely different to all other variants found in later UK pressings of SELL OUT. These posters are themselves so rare and so hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting, sellotape marks and pin holes.

THE INNER

Original inner sleeve in EXCELLENT condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits at all.

And don't be fooled, these are completely different to all other inner sleeves from the UK pressings of SELL OUT. These inners are themselves rare and so hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting.

RARITY

SELL OUT became one of the most iconic albums of the 20th century, but 1st MONO pressings were made in a very small run. Finding an original UK 1st press in great condition is unbelievably rare indeed. Its an extremely rare collectable, it is so hard to find a 1st pressing with great audio performance. There are so many quiet passages, it is undoubtedly one of the hardest pieces of vinyl from the early 1970's to find with great audio.

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this one is a brilliant example. Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl, rare 1st press inner sleeve, fantastic!.

A Mono SELL OUT pressing in this type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays superbly are incredibly rare. An ORIGINAL UK press, with ORIGINAL 1st Press Cover, original inner sleeve AND original Poster, all in great condition, makes this very rare indeed!

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:

Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
