CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and The Magic Band: Doc at the Radar Station. Used LP in Very Good+/Very Good+ condition; Virgin Records Catalog # VA 13148; 1980
Condition: Vinyl has a radial streak or two (no effect on the sound), scratch-free, label crystal clear; packaging entirely intact, graphics sharp, slight “crinkle” at lower left corner of record jacket rear.
Behind the Music: How does one introduce Captain Beefheart to younger generations? A good question! One might say he’s “an acquired taste.” Born Don Van Vliet, he was a visual artist who got involved with avant-garde contemporaries in the music scene. One would not call him a great singer, okay? (This is called Truth in Marketing.) A guy with a crazy sense of humor, yes, check that box. His music publishing entity at time of this recording was called Singing Ink Music. Almost everyone in The Magic Band played multiple instruments; I won’t even bother with the details, which I am sure you could research for yourself. Song titles: Hot Head, Ashtray Heart, A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit Gets to a Diamond; Run Paint Run Run, Sue Egypt, Brickbats, Dirty Blue Gene, Best Batch Yet, Telephone, Flavor Bud Living, Sheriff of Hong Kong, Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee. Let those titles sink in a bit. Beefheart’s recordings don’t seem highly valued by record collectors, thus my very reasonable asking price. Take a chance, buy this record! You might acquire a fresh taste.
