Spilverk þjóðanna was founded by Egill Ólafsson (Þursaflokkurinn, Stuðmenn), Sigurður Bjóla, Valgeir Guðjónsson (Stuðmenn) and Sigrún Hjálmtýsdóttir (now a prominent opera singer). They appeared on the scene in 1974 when disco and glam rock ruled and brought simplicity and honesty with sparse arrangement. They were very versatile and frequently exchanged instruments in mid-concert.

Sturla was voted album of the year in 1977 in Iceland and Sirkus Geira Smart was voted song of the year. Last June the album was voted number 10 in a search for the 100 best Icelandic albums of all time.
