SS (still sealed) -never opened or played M (mint) -absolutely perfect in every way -I never use this rating NM or M- (near mint) -shiny with no visible defects at all -no surface noise when played -nearly perfect VG+ or E (vg plus or excellent) -may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Most collectors, especially those who want to play their records would be happy with the VG+ record, especially if it is toward the high end of the grade sometimes called VG++ or E+ VG (very good) plays with more than normal surface noise and some scratches may be audible VG- (very good minus) plays through with no skipping but with heavy surface noise
