description:
Great album documenting Stockhausen's continuing investigations into the live electronic processing of his ensemble's instruments. Aloys Kontarsky, Fred Ailings, Rolf Gehlhaar, Johannes Fritsch, and Harald Boje perform and react to semi-improvised "sound events" prescribed in the score as Stockhausen controls the electronics to modulate the overall sound in realtime. Boje plays the Elektronium, an early electronic monophonic keyboard instrument based around a single vacuum-tube oscillator; it was invented in Germany in 1950 by Rene Seybold and produced by Hohner. Includes insert with notes by the composer. Beautiful cover art by the great multimedia artist Nicolas Schoffer.
artist info from album notes etc.:
Stockhausen was a German experimental composer who was a student of Olivier Messiaen and Werner Meyer-Eppler, a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis, and worked with Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Cornelius Cardew, Hugh Davies, Bruno Maderna, and Mauricio Kagel; he pioneered electronic music at the INA-GRM musique concrete studios of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bayle, and Bernard Parmegiani, at NHK Tokyo where Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Jon Appleton also composed, and at WDR Koln along with Herbert Eimert, Robert Beyer, Henri Pousseur, Gottfried Michael Koenig, Gyorgi Ligeti, Franco Evangelisti, Konrad Boehmer, Anestis Logothetis, and Herbert Brun, and he explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, Michel Portal, and New Phonic Art. Stockhausen's electronic free jazz compositions from this period would influence and draw influences from live electronic and improv artists like John Zorn, Sun-Ra, Derek Bailey, Borbetomagus, Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV), AMM, Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Otomo Yoshihide, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum, Instant Composers Pool, Jim O'Rourke, Miles Davis, and Nurse With Wound (NWW).
