NOTES:
The quintessential triple live album from America's best live band. The Dead tore through continental Europe and England in the spring of 1972 with Pigpen still intact. At this point, the band still had the bluesy soul swagger that Pigpen's (their de facto front man since their early days) presence evoked. In addition, the band's song catalog continued to evolve, producing excellent set lists as we have here with this compilation of songs from selected shows throughout said tour. Highlights include the definitive versions of "Cumberland Blues," "He's Gone," "Jack Straw," Hank Williams' "You Win Again," "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider," Elmore James' "It Hurts Me Too" and "Ramble on Rose." Garcia's Fender Stratocaster, a gift from Graham Nash, is the ideal axe for their amalgam of country, blues, soul, rock style and sound. Engineering and production is fantastic to boot. In the pantheon of all-time great live albums, this is without a doubt near the top. Many ardent Dead Heads will argue that 1977 was their best year. Certainly a more than sound argument. However, for my money, 1972 is THE year.
